Overavtive bladder-liklihood of being cured?

Our 6yr old daughter has an overactive bladder and longterm chronic constipation. She's on oxybutynin (3x daily) and movicol (1 sachet split am and pm). She catheterises 4x daily but is still wet overnight, and has a nightly mini-enema to prevent soiling (the only thing that has worked so far). She never achieved toilet training because of these issues. She's not a great drinker (even on oxybutynin) and has a natural liking for sugar and carbs. Liklihood of them being resolved in future? Will she ever lead a normal life?

Hi Apache21.
Can I ask if your daughter has been seen by any specialists for her bladder and bowel? Has she had investigations like any scans at the hospital?

Hi Julie, Yes she's now under referral to a consultant paediatric surgeon and the specialist continence nurses at the Childrens Hospital for Wales. This follows referral to the local health board paediatrician and continence nurse. She's had ultrasound scans which show bladder not completely empyting except following self catheterisation (which she does 4x daily), an MRI to check lower spine nerve integrity (nothing of concern raised) and most recently urodynamics tests which have prompted use of oxybutynin.

Hi Apache21

I think that your daughter has had the appropriate tests and seeing a paediatric surgeon will hopefully shed more light on things. Sugary and sweet drinks can really affect bladder symptoms and so you should try as much as you can to substitute these drinks for water.

Good luck!
