Hives

My daughter came out in hives around her mouth about twenty minutes after finishing her afternoon snack at nursery. Is this a common thing? I thought if it was a reaction it would be immediate (it has been with milk etc in the past). I actually witnessed it coming on her out of nowhere. It was very strange. Do I assume it's a delayed ige reaction? If so, do I assume the afternoon snack was the culprit or could it be from an earlier meal? Thank you.

Re: Hives

Dear kmmac1990

Immediate type reactions encompass anything from seconds to 60 minutes. Therefore I would definitely have a discussion with your GP about what was in the afternoon snack.

Best wishes

Re: Hives

Thank you very much. Is it always necessary to administer an anti histamine? My daughter did not seem concerned so I wasn't sure whether I would disturb her more by trying to get her to take medicine!

Re: Hives

Hello. It is important to determine whether this was an allergic reaction by finding out the ingredients and requesting a referral for allergy testing / full allergy consultation from your GP. We do recommend administering anti-histamine if a mild allergy reaction is occurring because it can help prevent worsening of symptoms.
I hope that helps.
Best wishes.

Re: Hives

As my colleagues suggest an allergy review would be beneficial. If you witnessed 'out of nowhere' hives before it might be possible that your daughter experiences spontaneous hives/urticaria. It is important to rule out allergy though as her reactions appeared not long after food.
