weight loss & menopausal age

I've always battled with my weight within about a stone and a half up or down. At the moment I am really trying hard to lose that stubborn weight, aware I'm getting older and need to start to look after myself and put myself first (kids now flown the nest an all that). But I'm struggling to lose the weight - could it be due to my age as I'm in that menopausal age bracket, or is it a myth that it's harder to lose weight if you're of a menopausal age. Thank you.

Weight gain around the time of the menopause is common and is due to changes in hormone levels and in the rate at which we burn off calories. With the estrogen deficiency of the menopause we also have changes in the way that our body handles glucose and insulin. There is some evidence that cutting down on carbohydrates (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, processed foods, sweets etc) and taking a fairly high protein diet with lots of vegetables and salads can really help. It is also a really important time to increase exercise, for which regular brisk walking is excellent, it doesn't have to anything expensive!
