osteoporosis and Spinal Stenosis

I have had severe spinal osteoporosis for several years and already have endplate fractures at L1,2 and 3. Following an MRI in November I have now been told I have Spinal Stenosis as well. I do my physio exercises daily and although epidural anaesthetics have helped in the past the last one failed completely.

Due to circumstances, I have had to stop taking oxycontin completely and the gabapentin that my consultant replaced it with is totally ineffective. I already suffer from urge incontinence and I now find that if I walk for more than about 25 yards because of sciatica in both legs and the numbness I experience from the waist down, I lose control of my bladder completely.

Does anyone have suggestions to help with pain relief or with the loss of bladder control? Also anyone with experience of spinal fusion? Has it helped the pain from the stenosis and what if any are the drawbacks of such surgery?

Thanks

Re: osteoporosis and Spinal Stenosis

Hello Kelvin45 and thank you for posting in our forums.

You say that some of your medication is now ineffective. Are there any alternatives that your doctor or consultant can recommend?

With regard to your urge continence, dependent on the severity of the condition, there are a number of products and treatments that might help. We are currently running a free Nurse Helpline for bladder incontinence so it might be worth talking to one of our nurses who may be able to provide you with some guidance around specific treatments that could help you. If you follow this link you can find out more information - http://www.talkhealthpartnership.com/fr ... upport.php

Also, our bladder hub has lots of useful information that might help - http://www.talkhealthpartnership.com/talkbladder/ and a bladder forum too - https://www.talkhealthpartnership.com/f ... .php?f=822

We run an Online Clinic on Bladder issues each year too - the next one isn't until June, but you may find some nuggets of information in last year's one - https://www.talkhealthpartnership.com/f ... .php?f=940

Likewise we run and Online Clinic on Arthritis and Pain Management - again this year's one isn't until much later in 2018, but last year's can be found here - http://www.talkhealthpartnership.com/on ... s_2017.php

I hope this helps in some way.

Best wishes
Deborah

Re: osteoporosis and Spinal Stenosis

I'm currently waiting to see a spinal surgeon and am hoping that they will have some ideas for pain relief. currently, my pain management consultant has discharged me as she feels there is nothing further she can do and my GP is struggling to find an alternative to my analgesics that will work for me. Although he is looking at the possibility of prescribing amitriptyline this may prove slightly problematic because of the anti-depressants I take.

As for the urge incontinence, i am already under the care of a continence nurse and the NHS are provided disposable nappies on a regular order.
thanks for the reply and the links.
