Can symptoms appear suddenly?

In people with type 1 diabetes, the onset of symptoms can be very sudden, while in type 2 diabetes, they tend to appear more gradually and sometimes there are no signs.

Sometimes symptoms occur after a viral illness. In some cases, a person can reach the point of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) before a type 1 diagnosis is made. DKA occurs when blood glucose is dangerously high and the body cannot get nutrients into cells due to the absence of insulin. The body then breaks down muscle and fat for energy, causing a buildup of ketones in the blood and urine. Symptoms of CAD include a fruity smell on the breath, heavy and labored breathing, and vomiting. If left untreated, CAD can lead to stupor, loss of consciousness, and even death.

Hence why it is so vital people are tested for diabetes. Even if you're unsure, get yourself tested: as johanbilly4 has said, diabetes can kill. It is worth a quick blood test to find out if you have the condition.

Please - to anyone reading this - don't be scared of having a blood test. I have had loads over the years. They are quick and painless and worth the 30 seconds of having a needle in your arm.

johanbilly4 is a wise one.
