My wife has started to go through the menopause and finds it hard to sleep – either because she wakes up in the middle of the night for no reason and cant go back to sleep or she wakes up in a burning sweat. This is now beginning to effect my sleeping and also making me irritable. She has said she is happy to go and sleep in another room but I don’t want that but I do need to sort out a way to sleep! I am a big advocate of sleeping separately if the situation requires it. In this case, sleeping separately may help you both as you will hopefully get better sleep and your wife will not feel guilty about disturbing your sleep. Sleeping separately is a pragmatic solution (probably 25-30% of middle-aged couples actually sleep separately) and it is not in any way a sign of problems in your relationship. With regards to menopause, the reason it disturbs sleep is the fluctuations in body temperature so advise your wife to not do anything that increases her body temperature before sleep, sleep in natural fibres and try and cool her body during the night
