Hello - my periods have suddenly become totally irregular... up until lockdown they were fine but since then i seem to skip a month and then have a heavy period and then 2 weeks later start another one.. there seems to be no pattern. I haven't been to see a GP as it seems all so difficult at the moment but now getting worried with lockdown possibly coming again - what do you suggest?

Thank you, Sarah

Dear Sarah,

Thank you so much for your message. The fact that your periods have changed significantly, warrants investigation. I would recommend seeing your GP as there are a number of factors in your medical history that need to be considered before a plan of investigation and management can be advised.

This website explains a little more about abnormal bleeding (your change in regularity would be considered abnormal) and so it's important to see the GP to start investigations and perhaps then be referred to a gynaecologist.

GPs are able to offer telephone consultations at the moment and gynaecology services in the hospital are all up and running again. I do not know what the government guidance will be with regards to outpatient hospital services but I would recommend getting the ball rolling on this.

There are some medications that GPs can prescribe even during lockdown, without a gynaecologist referral, to help with your symptoms and so it is worth having a discussion with them.
