Preventative measures
Are there any preventative measures that can be taken to stop this from occurring, for example any exercises?

Re: Preventative measures
You are correct, exercising the pelvic floor muscle is a good preventative measure, along with a healthy diet, good hydration and by keeping active.
It's recommended that these exercises are taught by a specialist nurse or specialist physio who will examine the pelvic floor muscle to determine strength and tone, then they will support you with specific exercises to improve/maintain it.
Your GP or NHS choices will direct you to your local community NHS bladder and bowel service.
