Embarrassed and worried

Have had this type of incontinence for over 2 years. I am 65, have been diabetic for 54 years, am coeliac, have flatulence, swollen stomach and require laxative daily.
I experience faecal incontinence at any time of day or night, always feel pressure, very often soiled underwear.
I am so embarrassed and worried, I would like to think of starting a new relationship but can't with this problem.
I have a healthy diet, diabetes is well controlled but don't know what to do now.
Thank you, Mary

Re: Embarrassed and worried

Hi Mary
There are several devices that may be of help to you, anal plugs which can be worn for several hours continuously, mini irrigation kits which can be used daily to wash out the rectum and anal canal. Cardomen seeds or aloe Vera capsules in the diet can help with excess flatus and bloating.
Your local specialist nurses should be able to advise further and enable you to try samples of any appropriate devices. Many services that offer specialist bladder and bowel advice will take self referrals over the telephone from the patient to save on embarrassment of seeing several professionals just to get a referral. NHS choices webpage should direct you to your local service contact.
