Older people

I sent a question prior to this to be submitted. I do not see it here. I asked as if we age, and put on weight, that actually the anal muscles expand, lose elasticity ......I have an ongoing white, non smelling discharge that burns the sides of the bottom. What should I do?

If I have any bowel issues, however brief, I have some faeces discharge also.

I also feel an ongoing pressure in that area, particularly if I have not gone to the bathroom that day. It is very uncomfortable.

Would appreciate your input and thank you

Re: Older people

Hi Siobhan
Yes as we age the elasticity of the muscles and the sphincters can and do deteriorate. White mucus discharge is usually nothing to worry about, there is an excess of mucus in the bowel lining that dispels. Using wet wipes to clean the anal area after defaecation can ease skin irritation. A structured course of muscle and sphincter exercises can improve the elasticity tone and tone and tolerance of the muscles and sphincters.. adding in something like golden linseed seeds to your diet can improve consistency of bowel movement

Re: Older people

It would be worth speaking to your GP and asking to be referred to your local continence service so that you can be taught how to strengthen your muscles. They will also be able to discuss potential aids that may help you to manage the symptoms such as anal inserts or plugs which can be worn between bowel movements and reduce the uncertainty.
