Anxiety and phobia!

Hello,
I have kind of bit weird query but for me it makes sense so hope it will for you too :) Last year I had 2 burglaries in my house and since then it has become very difficult for me to leave my house without continuously watching CCTV footage (I have put CCTV all around my house as per Police advice). I keep on checking it even when I am shopping or socialising outside. It feels like that I am living in constant fear that these burglars are gonna come back for sure even though it is just in my mind! I have tried CBT and counselling but did not work for me much so just wanted to ask if there is something I could do to ease my fear and calm these attacks! Thank you.

Re: Anxiety and phobia!

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

If you lived through a terrifying event or experience, you are likely to feel shattered and experience difficulty coping and adjusting. Certain traumatic events can be so severely frightening and overwhelming to individuals that they can cause temporary and sometimes permanent changes to how we physically and psychologically respond to stress in our lives. However, as time goes on, and with good individual care, you are likely to get better and move on with your life. On the other hand, if you can’t stop reliving the experiences and it affects your everyday functioning, you might be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

If you have experienced a terrifying traumatic event and now suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result, treatment does exist and following it can help you to rebuild your life. Learn all you can about your disorder and what effects it has on your body – this allows you to recognize signs and symptoms and coping strategies. Also, finding support groups can help you through difficult times and to learn that you may not be alone in your struggles.

For further resources please get in touch with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists http://bacp.co.uk who will be able to guide you further.

I hope you are able to find the support that you need.
