Mild IBS diagnosed. ?

I have been told by my functional medicine practitioner that I have mild IBS. He's not too concerned. And I don't feel that I have symptoms as such. Do you think I need to do anything?

Re: Mild IBS diagnosed. ?

Hi

You will need more information about your functional medicine practitioner to know if this is a definite, safe diagnosis. Sometimes complementary therapists do use these terms such as functional to describe themselves and their practice. Complementary therapists are not qualified to diagnose complex medical conditions, such as IBS. Check your doctor, if your practitioner is a doctor, is registered with the general medical council. If they are not then going to your GP is the best advice, and don't change your diet before you go. There are however very experienced functional gastroenterologists in practice - but we don't have many of these doctors in the UK at the moment. Please check here to ensure you have had a few simple tests to check you don't have any other medical condition, where mild symptoms can be all that is present, to suggest testing is required.

It is also possible that you have been told that you have IBS - when there is nothing wrong at all! Telling someone they have a medical condition when they don't can lead to unnecessary worry and concern - I would advise you to go and have a chat with your GP, this will not be a wasted appointment!
