Bloating

I have a problem with being bloated. It's almost constant and nothing seems to help. Even if I wake up with a flat stomach, any movement or a glass of water will make me balloon up. Going to the toilet or diet change does not seem to help.
I am not active outside of work but my job forces me to walk loads. I eat regular meals with lots of fruit and veg. Occasional fast food.

Re: Bloating

Hi Xpapibajkax

I am unsure of your gender with your name - if you are female, then I would suggest going to your GP with these symptoms and ruling out ovarian cancer, which is rare but can present with bloating type symptoms. A simple blood test can be used to check this.

Your GP can check for other conditions for others, which might be causing this symptom. Don't change your diet before you have had any tests as you need to keep eating wheat if a test for coeliac disease (an autoimmune condition where wheat damages the digestive tract) is being considered.

Bloating can result from either ingested air, (gas from fizzy drinks, swallowing air through smoking or vaping, chewing gum, rushing meals or gulping air) or through mishandling of fermented gases and liquids in the digestive tract, through having disordered digestive system functioning (IBS) and an overly sensitive bowel. You have said that you don't think that food is causing this - but sometimes it is difficult to tell what foods cause symptoms. Also, it might not be the food you have just eaten but the meal before or the night before perhaps. Your symptoms appear typical of bloating resulting from food - people wake with a flat stomach, and the bloating tends to get worse throughout the day as meals are consumed.

If the bloating is caused by having IBS, then a low fodmap diet can be helpful for this symptom but don't try this on your own. Ask your healthcare practitioner to refer you to a dietitian. It also should not be used for other conditions, except IBS.

If you haven't had any investigations for your symptoms I would encourage you to do this first.
