Re: Intermittent Self Catheterisation

There are many different brands of ISC catheter that can be trialled and most people will be able to find one to suit. If you are struggling with insertion then this could be the cause of pain, bleeding and UTIs. I would advise a discussion with your urology specialist nurse who should be able to sh...

Re: UTI'S

Yes there are a number of non-antibiotic alternatives with vary levels of efficacy and supporting evidence. Examples include methenamine Hippurate, D-mannose, cranberry supplements, vaginal oestrogen etc etc. There are a few good summary articles out there - perhaps the best is by Sihra et al in Nat...

Re: UTIs/Urethral Dilation

The procedure does not necessarily need to be repeated but if your symptoms deteriorate it can be. The risk of repeated urethral manipulation is scarring which can produce further symptoms.

Re: Up every 3/4 hours in the night

The first thing to do is a bladder diary to see how much urine you are producing overnight - this will help rule out a condition called nocturnal polyuria (excessive production of urine overnight). The treatment for this is different to the treatment for overactive bladder. It is essential to make t...

Re: Bladder Removal

I would advise that you request a review appointment with your current Consultant and explain that the instillation treatment is only helping a little bit and you have significant residual symptoms. Explain that you would like to discuss bladder removal. With regard to chronic UTI (which I think you...

Re: Is there any other treatment apart from ISC

This is a complex case. You appear to have 2 problems - firstly your bladder doesn't empty therefore you are reliant on self-catheterisation and secondly you are leaking between catheters. There is no tablet treatment to restore bladder function and enable you to re-establish normal voiding. Sacral ...

Re: Lack of pelvic floor contry

There is lots of help out there - you should ask the GP to refer to a continence advisor or pelvic floor physiotherapist. I'm not surprised the tablets are not helping as it sound like you have stress urinary incontinence and the tablets are for overactive bladder syndrome / urge urinary incontinence.

Re: BPH nocturnal diuresis

This sounds very much like nocturnal polyuria ( a condition where 33% or more of your daily urine output occurs during nighttime hours). If you keep a bladder diary for a few days prior to your next review appointment (marking the times when you go to bed and wake) then your urologist may be able to...

Re: Why do you start weeing again?

There are a number of possible reasons for this. If its a small amount then it may be due to an insufficient pelvic floor contraction at the end of the void which is usually the body's mechanism for making sure the last few drops of urine are expelled. If it is a larger amount then it could be due t...
