Re: kidney stones

Thanks for the question - it could have a very long answer but I will try to keep it short. A kidney stone is a crystallisation of some constituents of your urine into a solid stone. These can be small or large and often do not cause any symptoms and we are increasingly finding them as "inciden...

Re: could a pain in my side be kidney related?

I think your daughter maybe correct and certainly if the pain is severe enough to need a hot water bottle you should be checked out. The commonest cause of pain in this area is often related to the muscles and bones of the back but of course kidney pain can be the cause as well. One of the causes of...

Re: signs/symptoms of kidney problems

In the majority of patients with kidney disease/problems there are no symptoms unless the kidneys are failing dramatically. The abnormality is usually picked up in a blood test (serum creatinine) which is regularly monitored in patients at risk of developing kidney problems (Diabetics, hypertensives...

Re: UTI's

I am presuming that you are a lady and, if 70 years of age, will be post menopausal. I am not sure how long ago you had any scans performed but assuming that your kidneys and bladder are OK then the commonest cause for UTIs in a lady of your age is related to vaginal health. This deteriorates as the...

Re: borderline type 2 diabetes

Almost certainly not at such an early stage. Longstanding diabetes can effect kidney function if the control is poor as it can lead to damage of the small blood vessels in the kidney. Good diabetic control over many years is the secret to reducing your risks and your primary care team can keep an ey...

Re: Constant Kidney Pain and Soreness from on going issues

I am sorry to read this sad story. Clearly you have been through a lot and had many investigations. I am afraid this situation is not that uncommon after what sounds like chlamydia and epidiymitis. Some of your symptoms maybe explained by prostatitis but really this is a diagnosis that should be bas...

Re: 11 year old boy

Hi Lauren, This is clearly a very complicated urological problem that requires a lot of consideration and talking through. It sounds as if he is being looked after by a peadiatric urologist and if you remain unsure of the next best step you can ask to discuss it again in clinic with his urologists. ...

Re: Strange Kidneys & Strange Pains

I would explore this further. A horseshoe kidney is quite a common kidney anatomical variation that you were born with, The vast majority of patients have no problems with them but they are prone to a slightly higher risk of kidney stones and obstruction to the urine drainage than normally positione...

Re: Kidney twinges

I am so sorry to hear how you are suffering. Kidney health can be readily assessed at your GP surgery with a simple urine and blood test. If these are normal then your kidneys are fine - clearly if these prove abnormal your GP can then advise how to explore the situation further. Hope that helps

Re: UTI

Usually Urinary tract infections are of the lower tract (namely bladder and urethra) and do not effect the upper tracts (ureters and kidneys). In the vast majority of women (??Hockeymum) these infections are a really troublesome and have quite an impact on quality of life but do not effect the kidne...
